The Niels Bohr Institute
for Astronomy, Physics and Geophysics

As part
of its program for faculty renewal, the Niels Bohr Institute for Astronomy,
Physics and Geophysics (NBIfAFG) announces the availability of an associate
professorship in planetary physics. The position will be open from September 1,
2004. The NBIfAFG constitutes the physics department of the University of
Copenhagen with a faculty of 65. Details of the research activities of the
institute may be found on the home page www.nbifafg.ku.dk
The
Danish Space Research Institute and NBIfAFG have recently created a Center for Planetary Science, an
interdisciplinary environment for theoretical and experimental projects related
to planetary physics. The current activities of the Center include planetary
magnetic fields, ice on the planets, in situ magnet experiments on Mars, and the
physics of the Earth-Moon system. Scientists from all areas of planetary physics are encouraged to apply.
The
Institute seeks candidates with a record of outstanding and independent
research. Successful candidates should have a research profile driven by the
desire to understand physical phenomena and their origins. While having a solid
foundation in one or more current fields of research, he/she should demonstrate
scientific breadth and have the capacity to inspire others and to engage in
research in new directions. Candidates are expected to develop a research
program in which the interplay between theory, experiment, observation, data
analysis and/or modelling is central. The applicant should have a strong interest in all facets of university
teaching, including the supervision
of MSc and PhD students, and in contributing to the Institute’s visibility
through public outreach activities. The successful candidate must be able to
teach undergraduate courses in Danish within two years of appointment.
In
accordance with the Ministerial Circular on Job Structure, appointment to the
position of associate professor requires documented scientific production at an
international level and documented teaching qualifications. In the event that
the applicant lacks sufficient teaching experience through an appointment as
assistant professor or acquired corresponding teaching experience, the
appointment will be probationary for a period of up to 1½ years.
Terms
of appointment and salary are set by agreement between the Ministry of Finance
and AC (The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) on Academics in
the State. In addition to the salary based on seniority, the successful
applicant will receive an annual pensionable supplement of DKK 70.447,42.
